Supply chain management in the cloud got a big boost last week with the proposed merger of GT Nexus and TradeCard. The joint company is expected to manage $100 million in trade. And all of that trade will be visible from supplier to retailer, pushing companies further into demand-driven supply chain management. This promises to keep companies from overproducing or shipping product to areas where it just isn’t selling. All in all it should lead to lower supply chain costs, cheaper products and higher on-shelf availability.
I don’t expect this transition to be without hickups. Merging any two software systems is notoriously difficult. Add to that the issue of merging management and we’ve got a recipe for a tricky (normal?) merger. If every does work out, though, I’m sure they’ll have a tremendous view of the global supply chain. I’d love to get my hands on that data!
